“Donburi” is a uniquely Japanese dining culture that is said to have spread from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. Originally, the style of “quickly eating a bowl of rice topped with various side dishes” became popular among townspeople, and it established itself as a convenient ‘quick and tasty’ meal for busy craftsmen and travelers. From the Meiji period onward, donburi dishes began to be served in restaurants, and classic varieties such as tendon (tempura rice bowl), katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl), and oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl) emerged one after another.
「どんぶり」は、江戸時代後期から明治時代にかけて広まったと言われる、日本独自の食文化です。もともとは、丼に盛ったご飯に様々なおかずを乗せて、さっと食べるスタイルが町民の間で流行し、忙しい職人や旅人にとって「早くて美味しい」手軽な食事として定着しました。明治時代以降は、料亭でもどんぶり料理が提供されるようになり、天丼、カツ丼、親子丼といった定番の丼が次々と誕生しました。
