【history】
Soma no Maoi is a traditional event in Fukushima Prefecture with a history of more than 1,000 years.
Its origin is said to be that the warlord Taira Shomon of the Heian period released wild horses in Shimoso Province and drove them into the horses for military training.
Later, the Soma clan, a descendant of the shogunate, moved to Tohoku and inherited this event as a shrine.
In the Edo period, the form of the festival was established, and it has continued to be protected as the pride of the region since the Meiji era.
While overcoming the earthquake and changes in the social situation, the “living history” that the local people have worked together to inherit is still alive.
相馬の馬追は、1000年以上の歴史を持つ福島県の伝統行事です。
その起源は、平安時代の武将、平将門が下総国で野生馬を放ち、軍馬の訓練のために追い込んだことと言われています。
その後、将軍家の子孫である相馬氏が東北に移り住み、この行事を神社として継承しました。
江戸時代には祭りの形式が確立され、明治時代以降は地域の誇りとして守り続けられています。
震災や社会情勢の変化を乗り越えながら、地域の人々が力を合わせ、受け継いできた「生きた歴史」は今も息づいています。
【Feature】
The greatest attraction of the Soma Nomaoi Festival is the overwhelming sense of realism created by armored horsemen actually riding horses. It is not merely a tourist event, but a ‘sacred ritual’ held as a festival of the Soma Sanyo Myoken Shrines (Nakamura, Ota, Odaka), which is also a distinctive feature.
The main highlights are as follows:
１．A spectacular procession of about 400 armored warriors
２．Exciting competitions using real horses (armored horse races and sacred flag contests)
３．Traditional structure with roles divided by region
４．A valuable festival that conveys the memory of samurai culture to the present day

From 2024, to cope with extreme heat, the event period has been changed from the traditional July to the last week of May, making it easier for people to participate.
相馬野馬追の最大の魅力は、甲冑を身につけた騎手が実際に馬に騎乗することで生まれる圧倒的な臨場感です。単なる観光イベントではなく、相馬山陽妙見神社（中村、太田、小高）の祭礼として執り行われる「神事」であることも大きな特徴です。
主な見どころは以下の通りです。
１．約400体の甲冑武者による壮観な行列
２．本物の馬を使った白熱の競技（甲冑競馬や神旗競走）
３．地域ごとに役割分担された伝統的な構造
４．武家文化の記憶を今に伝える貴重な祭り
５．国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定
2024年からは、猛暑対策として、開催期間が例年7月から5月最終週に変更され、より多くの人が参加しやすくなりました。

■ Day 1: Departure Ceremony
At Soma Sanmyoken Shrine, the warriors declare their departure and march toward the main camp.
The gleam of armor and the neighing of horses signal the beginning of the festival.
■ Day 2: Parade and Armored Horse Racing
The parade through the city streets looks like a historical picture coming to life.
In the afternoon, armored warriors wearing white headbands race on horseback in the armored horse races, sending waves of excitement through the audience.
■ Day 3: Sacred Flag Snatching Battle
The climax of the festival.
Brave horseback warriors compete to seize the sacred flag that is launched high into the sky in a magnificent ritual.
The sound of hooves, the dust rising, and the warriors’ fighting spirit merge together, enveloping the venue in intense energy.
■ 1日目：出陣の儀
相馬三妙見神社では、武者たちが出発を告げ、本陣へと向かって行進します。
甲冑のきらめきと馬のいななきが祭りの始まりを告げます。
■ 2日目：行列と甲冑競馬
市街地を練り歩く行列は、まるで歴史絵図が蘇ったかのようです。
午後からは、白頭巾をつけた甲冑武者たちが馬上で競馬を繰り広げ、観客を熱狂の渦に巻き込みます。
■ 3日目：神旗奪取合戦
祭りのクライマックス。
勇敢な騎馬武者たちが、壮麗な儀式で天高く掲げられた神旗を奪い合う。
蹄の音、舞い上がる土埃、そして武者たちの闘志が一つになり、会場は熱気に包まれます。
