【History】

Hokkaido was formerly known as “Ezochi,” where the indigenous Ainu people lived alongside the region’s abundant nature.

From the Kamakura period onwards, Wajin (Japanese people) began to move in from Honshu, and trade began. During the Edo period, the Matsumae Domain was established, and Wajin settlements expanded, mainly in the southern part of the island.

In the Meiji period, the government began full-scale development of Hokkaido. Ezochi was renamed “Hokkaido,” and immigrants flocked to the region from all over Japan.

Western agricultural techniques were actively introduced, and modernization progressed, with the establishment of Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University).
