【History】
No discussion of Miyagi Prefecture’s history can begin without mentioning Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai domain.
Masamune built Sendai Castle and developed the castle town into the heart of Tohoku.
Masamune also had a major influence on food culture, establishing a system for producing Sendai miso and actively promoting the development of new rice fields to develop rice cultivation.
During the Edo period, large quantities of rice were shipped from Ishinomaki Port to Edo, and the area was known as an important region supporting Edo’s food culture.
Furthermore, Miyagi Prefecture has long nurtured a food culture that makes use of the bounty of its seas and mountains, and this tradition lives on today.
【Features】
Miyagi Prefecture is blessed with a balanced natural environment, with the Ou Mountains to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Sendai Plain in the center.
Each region has its own unique climate, with relatively warm and comfortable temperatures on the Pacific coast and heavy snowfall in the mountainous areas.
Furthermore, Matsushima Bay is famous as one of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Spots, and its landscape of islands large and small is highly acclaimed both within Japan and overseas.
